The Futurebirds – “Solitaires” is inspired by a graph that correlates loneliness with age—one of those internet finds that Co-frontman C.W. King stumbled upon. What began as a bummer turned into a moment of clarity. King took that impending doom of isolation and flipped it, choosing instead to appreciate the relationships around him. As he put it, “What is actually depressing about this whole thing is that I am spending any of these fleeting moments that I have here looking at loneliness graphs on the internet.” The song is a silver lining in the cloud of getting older—a sonic salve to soothe the soul.
The track is part of Futurebirds’ LP Easy Company, their first release with Dualtone Records. The album arrives on the other side of the Athens, Georgia group’s 15th anniversary, and it’s a celebration of the ties that have kept them together. It’s also a testament to change and evolution. With the help of producer Brad Cook (Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Waxahatchee, Bon Iver), Futurebirds have captured the raw energy of their live performances, ensuring Easy Company is an explosive addition to their catalog.
Easy Company features four tracks from each of the band’s three frontmen/songwriters, and if the rest of the album is anything like “Solitaires,” Futurebirds will continue to dodge any attempt to pigeonhole their sound. Their blend of rock & roll, electrified folk, and cosmic American roots music is as unique as ever.
